The
NAMI support group is for relatives and friends of persons with
serious mental illnesses (brain disorders). Families having
difficulty finding help for their loved ones who are ill or who
are facing strained family relationships can find help in such a
group setting where mutual self-help is available from others who
do understand and who have experienced similar difficulties.
The
meeting, sponsored by the NAMI affiliate in the south suburbs not
only provides an opportunity to meet others in similar
circumstances but is a way to learn new information and, perhaps
most of all to gain hope of successful outcomes. Sharing
concerns and hearing how others deal with problems and successes
can show that all is not bleak.
Volunteer
facilitators lead the group, which meets on the second Thursday of
each month throughout the year at the same time and
location. There is no charge to attend. For further
information about the group and/or NAMI, please call John Rowley
at 708.798.3862.

NAMI
Connection, a recently formed recovery support group for
persons who have mental illnesses, meets every Thursday at 4:30
p.m. at 12145 S. Western Ave., Blue Island. People who attend have
the opportunity to learn from the experiences of others, share
coping strategies and offer encouragement and understanding. The
group is sponsored by the south suburban affiliate of the National
Alliance on Mental Illness and meets for about two hours in the
offices of the Threshold organization
“Support
groups are extremely important in the recovery process,” said
Marianne Bithos, board member of NAMI South Suburbs of Chicago.
“The setting allows them to make contact with others in similar
circumstances, discuss concerns, share insights and information,
share messages of comfort and hope – and socialize.”
